I have never seen The Searchers. I remember too when it was vogue to make fun of John Wayne. They did that in my generation as well. My problem with the zen trend/philosophy of just do and not think is that, while helpful at times (great for generalized anxiety, for ex), it does not allow for problem solving and adaptive thinking (which I think are key). I think using your mind to your advantage, rather than discarding it, may be the way to go 90% of the time. The other 10% of the time, like when I am completely exhausted at the end of a hard race, I pull a Murakami I am a machine mantra, and man it works!
