I always figured this was happening, but I thought it was with Ticketmaster's consent.
Four California men were busted Monday for hacking into online ticket sellers like Ticketmaster and grabbing up 1.5 million prime seats for concerts and ball games - shutting out ordinary fans.Calling themselves Wiseguy Tickets, the four men pulled in more than $25 million between 2006 and 2009 by using computer tricks to virtually muscle their way to the head of the line when an online sale began.
They were so successful that they became "the leading source of the best tickets for the most popular events," according to a 43-count federal indictment unsealed in New Jersey.
For one July 2008 performance by Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band at Giants Stadium, Wiseguys purchased nearly half of the most desirable general admission floor tickets near the stage.
The racket blocked ordinary fans from buying face value tickets, forcing them to turn to scalpers and price-gouging ticket brokers, officials said.
The scam worked so well that one of their associates sent an email worrying that "the general public may snap" and suggesting that the scammers commission a poll of ordinary ticket buyers to see "how much more they can handle."
The defendants allegedly bought up thousands of tickets, which they sold at a steep mark-up - as much as $1,000 per ducat - to ticket brokers, who then jacked the price again before selling them to fans.
"The public thought it had a fair shot at getting tickets to these events, but what the public didn't know was that the defendants had cheated them out of that opportunity," said U.S. Attorney Paul Fishman.
Among the events the men targeted were concerts by Bruce Springsteen, Hannah Montana, Bon Jovi, Barbara Streisand, Billy Joel, Phish, AC/DC and Coldplay, prosecutors said.
They also bought up tickets to Broadway shows like "Wicked" and "The Producers," the 2006 Rose Bowl, the 2007 Major League Baseball playoff games at Yankee Stadium, and even tapings of the TV show "Dancing with the Stars."
The companies hacked include Ticketmaster, Live Nation, Tickets.com, Music Today, Telecharge and Major League Baseball.
"It's disgraceful that this situation went on for as long as it did, depriving fans of seeing performers whom they support," said Camille DeSantis, a New Yorker still steaming she was shut out of an online sale for Ringo Starr tickets at Radio City Music Hall.
"Within 10 seconds [or less] they said they didn't even have one ticket left," she said.
"I frankly think the entire system has been broken and fixing it has to extend beyond the prosecution of these four guys."
Authorities in Newark charged Kenneth Lowson, 40, Kristofer Kirsch, 37, Faisal Nahdi, 36, and Joel Stevenson, 37, in the scheme.
The four allegedly hired a hacker in Bulgaria to program a way around the CAPTCHA technology that requires ticket buyers to read and re-type two distorted random words to prove they are a person, not a computer program.
In a spectacular irony, the defendents managed to take a process meant to distinguish between a human and a machine - and automate it.
The indictment alleges they even programmed their bots to make mistakes, to make them appear to be human buyers.
When the bots swarmed a Web site, they were able to fill out CAPTCHA fields faster than any human.
If convicted, each Wiseguy Tickets defendant faces a maximum of 20 years in prison on each charge, as well as a fine of $250,000 per count.
"Unfortunately for the defendants, they are the FBI's first example of what happens to criminals when we combine the talent and resources in our white collar and cybercrime programs," said Edward Kahrer, FBI Assistant Special Agent in Charge in Newark.
"As technology and the world move forward, the FBI will endeavor to remain one step ahead."
The probe began after howls of outrage went up last year when Bruce Springsteen fans complained all tickets were gone within seconds, only to be immediately listed on re-sale sites at steep markups.
Ticketmaster was slapped by state authorities in New Jersey for sending customers to its own reseller, TicketsNow, and agreed to quit the practice and offer Springsteen fans refunds. It settled with charges of deceptive sales tactics with the Federal Trade Commission just last month.

I take your point about there being lots and lots of software running behind the scenes that is effectively invisible to users. The DR web server appears to be run by a bounty of open source software Apache, Debian GNU/Linux, PHP, Python, OpenSSL, etc. Theres probably a MySQL server running as well. Thats great, and, obviously, not apparent just by peeking at the site html.

I agree with you that Times New Roman is ugly (ironic that this comment is appearing in that very font) and prefer Microsoft San Serif as my default. Why just because its open, simple and neat. Arial is OK but the characters appear a little too rounded, almost bubbles. Anything is likely better than my handwriting these days so Im not really passionate about this. Just keep the size large enough so I can read it without a magnifying glass.

Great post Doug, and good point by MDS. The regular season-post season split with just 11 postseason games in Brady's case and 9 in Manning's case is a classic example of a split that probably doesn't mean as much as a lot of people seem to think. JMHO.

Brute Force has some great players and I know for a fact that their teams points are far being the most accurate than are recorded in the books. Their team cares more about getting the W than who scored. Lets not forget they have had some big wins without their leading scorer. You guys had some nice picks, picking BF to lose in the first round.Their leading scorer also plays for Black Ice who is destroying your expert brackets too.

And its a good one. The movie doesnt stick strictly by any version of the legend. It varies from the McKenna account as much as it strays from all the others. Still, Edward G. Robinson plays a great Adams. For me the most memorable scene has most of the characters sitting around a camp fire. One of them recognizes Adams as The Adams, and they all persuade him to tell the story of how he came to find the gold, how the massacre happened, and how it was lost. A great scene, even if it werent about the Lost Adams Diggings legend. Adams sat around a lot of camp fires in the 1870s and told that story, probably about the way Edward G. Robinson tells it in the movie. The final episode is pure fabrication, but spectacular enough to make up for it. This ones a winner and you dont need to care or know about the Adams legend of lost gold to appreciate it.

When I heard about Sanchez saying he knew he would need surgery even before the trade I was stunned. The quote from B.S., above, where he uses the poker terminology all-in is a jaw dropper. Leaving aside all the smoke and mirrors from the columnists, it is clear that the Giants GM knew the extent of Sanchezs injuries when he made this deal.

Good post and a nice summation of the problem. My only problem with the analysis is given that much of the population joined the chorus of deregulatory mythology, given vested interest is inclined toward perpetuation of the current system and given a lack of a popular cheerleader for your arguments, I'm not seeing much in the way of change.

I don't know if conferences, divisions, and playoff procedures are really about fairness or even helping the best team win the Super Bowl. These rules are probably mostly intended to generate fan interest and ultimately increase revenues. The conference and divisional alignments create rivalries and allow for milestones (late season excitement) short of winning the Super Bowl even if they aren't the most fair way to determine the best team.

You know what I see here on this website? I see a few people that are only for the Democratic party! I can tell all of you that agree with what Obama, and his henchmen are trying to do, that you had better wake up! Forget about the party, think about your Country! This guy is out to destroy America, and if some of you cant see that, then you are blind! We the people have to, and will stop this poor excuse for a President!maybe there are some of you that think that we cannot stop him, and his party, but there are only 536 POLITICIANS in Washington that think that they can do whatever they want! Well my dear Americans, there are over 300 million of us, that are saying that they cant do whatever they want! So to use his words, YES WE CAN!!!!Remember they work for us! We are the boss not them, even if they think otherwise!

Obamas forces he is sending out to shout down and do everything in their power to stop those angry mobs at the town halls have decided to use force. His thugs from SEIU union and Acorn went up to a black townhall protester who was passing out buttons and flags saying Dont Tread on Me at a St.Louis Townhall Meeting. Four of the thugs destroyed his stand, threw him to the ground, and began kicking him in the head, ribs, and legs. Finally the cops came and stopped them. The man was taken to a hospital where he was kept overnight. Six men were arrested. None of the Townhall protesters have ever gotten violent, but as soon as Obamas thugs came to disrupt the honest protesters, Chicago politics began, and here comes the clubs and next the guns. Chicago mobsters/Gestapo sounds a lot alike. Funny too.Fox network was the only one who told the details about the incident. The other networks just said there was a riot at the townhall meeting and six people were arrested. Hhmmmmm.I wonder why??? Obama bought press?

Gandhi was born in 1869. He begins his autobiography by describing his family and the caste to which they belonged. Gandhi later struggled against the caste system of India. Gandhi's formal schooling had little impact on him. He believed that the teacher should be the textbook, and the teacher and the teacher's moral qualities should be what the student retains. At the age of 13, Gandhi was married to a younger girl. At age 35, Gandhi took a vow of celibacy and saw his wife as a creature of pure love.

Finally, people SHOULD learn to do things by hand and head first, then move up to a calculator. I dont know about classrooms today, but when I had to take algebra, calculus, and statistics, I had to SHOW MY WORK. This not only forced me to think, but also proved useful when I had to take a number of tests in order to get a job (whether its taking a test for CPA, bookkeeper, or for a government job, youre not allowed the use of aids like calculators or slide rules; all youre allowed is good old pencil and paper).

I met her. Not that anyone cares, but I met her and Carmen Kass (another model) at a restaurant in NY. My husband and I were having dinner and I excused myself to go outside and have a cigarette (I dont smoke anymore. yeah! 3 years nownot that anyone cares) where was I? oh, so there they were outside being all tall and shit. I tried to overhear their conversation, but couldnt. I noticed them going outside several times after that to smoke I guess while everone else was eating. hmm. Anyway, they are ridiculously gorgeous. ugh. The end.

I wish I had read the reviews before I rented it. I HATE reading movies!! If I wanted to read, Id buy a book. The preview is misleading, because no one says anything. The least they could do is dub in English. I dont care how good anyone says the movie is, if I have to read it, it gets an F-, ad goes down from there.

Hey matey, thanks again for another detailed post I really enjoyed reading it. I take it that you know what you are doing in terms of web creation and content creation because your website looks fabulous. I have been taking a brief look at your website in terms of SEO and you currently only have around 300 backlinks (quality backlinks) because of the nature of the niche you are in you should really be looking for some SEO services. I own my own seo company and we offer free competition analysis's and quotes so if your interested please feel free to submit your details to us and I will take a proper look for you. My website is cyberrankings(dot)com :) which can also be found by clicking on my name above this post, I am sure you know what I mean..Oh and by the way your advertisement seems to appear at the top of the page covering some on your content (in firefox) and yet it seems to work fine in internet explorer as I have just checked for you. It may be worth putting the html coding in again as I have had the same problem with one of my websites before and for some reason re-installing the coding seemed to do the job! Just thought I should let you know

I find it interesting how anyone who does not praise SDM is deemed jealous especially if it is someone in the film industry or a writer. Maybe those folks actually found the movie to be average like a lot of other ordinary people (most know nothing about India and the poverty or slums is not the issue).

Great race. Good crowd, beautiful scenery, neat course for spectators. Two possible improvements: 1) water stations were not actually at the mile markers. This threw off my refueling (GU), often having to dig out a GU and slam it as I came up on an early station. 2) No station from mile 6 to 9 was tough. Overall, a well-organized race. I had a great run, running the first time ever with my brother. Thanks.

Im surprised at the lack of sophistication in Rushdies comments. Calling a story not realistic is not a legitimate criticism of the story, its just a description. This characterization is irrelevant to a judgment of a movie or any other story. Slumdog, and from what I read the novel from which it is adapted, is a tale, not a docudrama. Its intentionally somewhat fantastical. And from western viewers point of view, same goes for language thing as far as were concerned, theyre all supposed to be speaking Hindi the whole time and we accept the convention of some actors (kids) speaking Hindi, some English. Never heard/read anyone comment on this.

Interestingly, prior to his time with Boston in '91, he had good K and walk rates (~2.5 BB/9, and K/BB over 2.5) in the minors. But his BB/9 shot up to 4.2 with the Red Sox, and he never got it back below 3.5 in 4 subsequent minor league seasons.

shearer was my footballing hero.since the age i properly started to understand football i have revered him as my idol.in my opinion he should be considered in the pantheon of greats of his era, figo, zidane et al.though he is an icon he would have had legendary status if he had just joined a big club such as man utd, but he didnt and instead chose to stay true to his roots by joining newcastle.he often carried our team in many ways.he always wore the geordie strip with pride and carried our banner with pride, humility and honour.he is for want of an analogy, what raul is to real madrid and spain.both are club legends and greats for their country who have similar characters.shearer is the greatest player to wear our strip purely for the reason that he did it so brilliantly.nonetheless i am sure beardsley goes up there but i wasnt born when he was really strutting his stuff.

Which is why an old topic which has been debated to death here comes up again and again like a ghost to haunt us and still receives audience ,while good articles often well researched ones do not get any attention at all ,I recollect a thoroughly well researched article detailing Satyajit Rays work published sometime back got 13 comments ,a post describing a radically new idea for cinema (open cinema foundation) gets no comments at all from the authors and we talk about change ,maybe Anurag is right.

Your weblog is fine. I simply need to touch upon the design. Its too loud. Its doing way an excessive amount of and it takes away from what youve bought to say which I feel is de facto important. I dont know if you happen to didnt suppose that your phrases could hold everyones attention, however you have been wrong. Anyway, in my language, there usually are not a lot good source like this.

I agree with Clive, Session 9 is not a well known creepfest.Jacobs Ladder is a semi known creepy movie.Popcorn, was a cheesy film, but that cult film in the film was quite creepy. The Funhouse scared me when I was little.Aftermath is a short film that is just disturbing. So if you havent heard of these, they are fun Halloween rentals too. But I dont have a movie blog or anything so you dont have to listen to me

Great blog post. The things i would like to add is that computer memory has to be purchased when your computer cannot cope with that which you do with it. One can add two RAM boards containing 1GB each, as an example, but not certainly one of 1GB and one having 2GB. One should always check the car makers documentation for the PC to make sure what type of storage is essential.
