When Lou Reed released Metal Machine Music in 1975, people didn't know what to think. However, before Metal Machine Trio's performance at Blender Theater on April 24, Reed assured the audience that he really must not have been trying to piss off the record labels by releasing that album since he's performing this type of music today. The appropriately named evening, A Night of Deep Noise, delivered on its promise. MM3, which is comprised of Reed (processed and unprocessed guitars), Ulrich Krieger (tenor sax, live electronics) and Sarth Calhoun (live processing and continuum), along with American composer John Zorn on the sax, played a non-vocal hour-long set that went back and forth from soothing to intense in a matter of seconds. It was definitely worth checking out, and hopefully you had a chance to see them while they were here.
