POLITICAL JUNK | Attorney General Alberto Gonzales Resigns

It's about time:

Attorney General Alberto Gonzales has resigned, ending a months-long standoff with Republican and Democratic critics who called for his ouster over the Justice Department's botched handling of FBI terror investigations and the firing of U.S. attorneys.

What was the straw that broke the camels back? Bush has been extremely loyal to Alberto and I'm curious to know what finally led to this resignation.......

Tovar:

WORST ATTORNEY GENERAL EVER!
I hope the Congress committees continue to investigate his roles in the attorney firings, this has been a leitmotif for this administration. Let's just resign and hopefully all these pesky investigations will just go away.

telex:

And what was wrong regarding the attorney firings? umm didnt the previous president fire all 93 us attorneys?

Tovar:

Yes, telex you are correct. However what made this one so interesting was the fact that they had been fired without any official reason , and their stories aren't really matching on why each particular attorney was fired. Look at David Iglesias' case in particular. The reason they gave for his dismissal was "poor performance," evidently forgetting that just prior to that he was praised for his perfomance as a federal prosecutor.

Yes, it is at the President 's discretion on who is to serve the Dept. of Justice. But they usually do it every 4 yrs. Not right after the midterm elections.

And you cannot commend Alberto Gonzales's handling of the situation, especially after the piss poor showing in front of Congress. That was just plain embarrassing, and I hear he will still be investigated.

How can you defend his record, Telex?

telex:

I was not a fan of gonzales, he was too soft on the border control issue and we need an attorney general who is not afraid to be hard-lined when necessary. However, the firing of the judges is well within the executive powers and your argument of when it is "usually done" is completely subjective.
Plus, I grew up in the era of Janet Reno, not exactly the standard bearer for competent AG's.

Bob:

I'm trying to keep away from reading posts like this. It is totally meaningless. Ain't it shame to post rubbish like this?
